I have two in my garden they’re not in the shade yet they give of no light what-so-ever at night,i really want to get them working,is there another way of powering them up,i can’t have electricity running to the garden, besides that’s against the point of having solar lighting, please help .

Most solar lights have a small plastic tab inside their battery compartments. If yours have these then remove them. It will mean uncoupling the lens from the top cap, usually a bayonet type affair – very easy.

If the batteries are more than a year old then you could try recharging them in a mains charger for a couple of hours (about £4 from B&Q), or replace them. Most solar lights take the AA size "NiCad" or "NiMH" type of rechargable batteries.

Don’t put ordinary AA size batteries into them, the voltage is sligtly more than rechergables and it could damage the light’s electronics.

Greenpeace is doing workshops and programs to encourage world leaders to protect the environment in developing countries. As part of the initiative, they gave solar panels to U.S. President Barack Obama’s step-grandmother, Sarah Obama.

She supports the efforts of Greenpeace to move Kenyans and other Africans over to solar power.

[Sarah Obama, Step-Grandmother of U.S. President Obama]:
“The benefit that I have seen is that I do not have to buy kerosene. When night falls, I switch on the lights powered by solar energy. Light is the most important thing for which I require energy at night. I do not have to use a torch but just switch on the light when I am looking for something, whether it is day or night. I do not have to buy kerosene for my lighting. I really love solar energy because of that.”

Young people who participated in a renewable energy workshop installed the solar panels in Sarah Obamas home.

Greenpeaces Solar Generation Program promotes the use of clean energy among the world’s youth. In Africa, youths are being trained to produce solar-powered lamps and chargers that can power mobile phones and batteries.

Most of Kenya’s power is generated by hydroelectric dams, but drought has depleted water levels and has led to power cuts. The country is now planning to generate electricity from geothermal, wind and clean coal sources.

U.S. President Obama and other world leaders will be meeting in Copenhagen in December to discuss climate change.

[Abigail Habinas, Greenpeace Coordinator]:
“Politicians talk and leaders act. Youth around the world are actually leading climate action, we are pressuring and challenging President Barack Obama and other heads of state to promote and embrace renewable energy as well. We need heads of state to have an agreement by the Climate Summit in Copenhagen that would not compromise the future generation and that would protect the environment.”

Greenpeace is calling on President Obama and other world leaders to support renewable energy as well.
